Filip Salac wasted no time asserting his authority in the Moto2 Austria 2026 practice session. The OnlyFans American Racing Team rider clocked a 1:32.402, edging out Ivan Ortola by a mere 0.097 seconds. This session served as an early warning that Salac is ready to battle at the Red Bull Ring, a circuit that demands bravery under braking and sharp acceleration out of corners.

The fight at the top was incredibly tight. Ivan Ortola of QJMOTOR - Campolor - MSI had to settle for second, just 0.097 seconds adrift. Daniel Holgado (CFMOTO Inde Team) completed the top three, 0.198 seconds back. The gap among the top five was no more than 0.236 seconds, highlighting the evenly matched field and the potential for a fierce battle in the race.

Notably, Mario Suryo Aji broke into 11th with a 1:32.969, 0.567 seconds behind Salac. The Idemitsu Honda Team Asia rider showed consistency in the midfield and has a strong chance of progressing directly to Q2 if he maintains this form. Meanwhile, several big names like Aron Canet (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) had to settle for 17th, and Sergio Garcia (ITALJET Gresini Moto2) was down in 24th, proving that this practice session was not without surprises.

From a technical standpoint, the Red Bull Ring is known as a stop-and-go circuit with long straights and sharp corners. Teams must find the right setup compromise between top speed and braking stability. Salac appears to have found that balance, while his rivals are still searching for an edge.

The session also served as a proving ground for young riders. Alonso Lopez (ITALJET Gresini Moto2) finished 10th, followed by Senna Agius (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP) in 12th. Meanwhile, Asian riders like Mario Suryo Aji and Ayumu Sasaki (20th) added international flavor to the competition.

With this result, Salac sets the benchmark for the next sessions. However, Moto2 history often shows that practice speed doesn't always translate to race results. Consistency and tire management will be key. Can Salac maintain his dominance, or will Ortola and Holgado strike back? The answer will unfold in qualifying and the race.
