The controversy surrounding Pierre Gasly's Monaco podium has taken a new turn. The FIA has confirmed that the appeals lodged by McLaren and Red Bull will be heard next week, following the controversial decision to reinstate Gasly's third place.
That decision came after Alpine won a right of review, presenting evidence that Gasly did not exceed the pitlane speed limit. The FIA admitted that FOM, F1's timekeeper, had made an error in measuring the pitlane distance, which caused average speeds to be over-reported. As a result, the two five-second penalties that had dropped Gasly to seventh were rescinded, giving him back his podium.
However, the decision sparked outrage among several teams, as other drivers had already served similar penalties during the race. Oscar Piastri was particularly vocal, having made an extra pitstop to serve his penalty, only to finish behind Gasly and Isack Hadjar.

"I'm pretty mind-blown by the decision," Piastri said in Barcelona. "When other people have been penalised for the same thing and served a penalty in the race, how you can then change one penalty, knowing that at least five or six other races have been impacted by that, is astonishing."
George Russell was arguably the hardest done by, as the Mercedes driver lost a potential podium when he pitted - only for stewards to determine he hadn't served the penalty correctly. This resulted in a drive-through penalty that dropped him to 12th, leaving him 68 points behind his championship-leading team-mate Kimi Antonelli.
"I've obviously lost the position, but I can only imagine how George is feeling," added Piastri. "I lost the position to Pierre because I served the penalty. Technically I should be P3, but then technically George should be P3. The whole thing is now a mess. It's quite the precedent they've got themselves into."
With McLaren and Red Bull appealing, the FIA now faces the task of ensuring consistency. Next week's hearing will be crucial in determining whether the rules can be applied fairly to all drivers.
