Formula 1, Sportrik Media - The Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit once again hosts the first Sprint event of the season, marking the second consecutive year the format has debuted in China.

The Sprint format significantly alters the structure of a race weekend compared with a traditional grand prix. Alongside China, additional Sprint rounds in the 2026 calendar include Miami, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Singapore.

Under the Sprint structure, teams are given only one free practice session lasting one hour on Friday morning. This limited preparation time is particularly challenging under Formula 1’s new power unit era, where performance now depends heavily on managing a near 50-50 split between internal combustion power and electrical energy.

With such complex energy management requirements, teams and drivers have very little time to adapt to the handling of their cars around the Shanghai circuit before Sprint Qualifying begins later on Friday afternoon.

Sprint Qualifying determines the grid for the shorter race held on Saturday, which runs at roughly one-third of the distance of a full grand prix. After the Sprint Race, teams return to the track later the same day for the traditional qualifying session that sets the starting order for Sunday’s main race.

Ahead of the 2026 season, however, the FIA introduced an adjustment to the Sprint weekend format, specifically affecting the single practice session.

Previously, if a red flag interrupted practice, the session clock would continue counting down until the scheduled one-hour period expired. Under the revised regulation, race control now has the option to extend the session if a stoppage significantly disrupts running.

The decision to extend the practice session must be made before 45 minutes of the session have elapsed. If no extension is approved before that point, the practice will continue normally until the original one-hour limit is reached.

The rule has been introduced to ensure teams and drivers have a fair opportunity to gather crucial setup data during Sprint weekends, where track time is extremely limited.

Whether the regulation will be applied during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend remains uncertain, but with the technical complexity of the new generation of Formula 1 cars, any additional minutes on track could prove valuable for teams seeking optimal performance.
