FIA has officially opened the door for the return of V8 engines to Formula 1 as early as the 2030 season. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated that the comeback of the iconic engine configuration is now considered inevitable.

Speaking during the Miami Grand Prix weekend earlier this month, Ben Sulayem explained that Formula 1 is moving toward a much simpler power unit concept compared to the current highly complex hybrid era. According to him, the proposed V8 package would feature only minimal electrification while prioritising reduced technical complexity.

“V8 is coming. It’s only a matter of time,” Ben Sulayem said.

The FIA confirmed that introducing V8 engines in 2030 would still require approval from four of Formula 1’s six existing power unit manufacturers. However, beginning in 2031, the governing body would hold the authority to implement the regulation change without requiring a manufacturer vote.

The proposed engine concept is expected to retain a small level of electrification but in a significantly simplified format compared to the current turbo-hybrid V6 systems introduced in 2014. FIA also wants to deliver lighter cars, louder engine sound, and lower power unit development costs.

“The mission is less complication, not like now. We want to bring back the sound, make the cars lighter, and reduce complexity,” Ben Sulayem added.

The future direction of Formula 1 power units has become one of the biggest technical discussions during the opening phase of the 2026 regulation era. Several drivers and teams have already criticised the heavy reliance on electrical energy within the current regulations, arguing that it negatively affects racing characteristics.

Max Verstappen has been among the most vocal critics after repeatedly raising concerns about energy deployment and battery management under Formula 1’s latest generation of cars.

The potential return of V8 engines could dramatically reshape Formula 1’s technical direction over the next decade. Beyond the emotional appeal of louder engines that many fans continue to miss, the FIA also sees simpler power units as a key way to reduce costs and maintain the sport’s long-term appeal during a rapidly evolving automotive industry transition.

With Formula 1’s turbo-hybrid V6 era now entering its 13th season since being introduced in 2014, discussions regarding the championship’s future beyond 2030 are expected to intensify further over the coming years. The FIA is now openly pushing Formula 1 toward a new era focused on lighter, simpler, and more emotional engine concepts.
