In a surprising move, the FIA race direction at the Madring circuit in Spain announced changes to the hybrid energy usage rules after the first day of practice. The decision comes in response to issues arising from the track's highly technical nature, which made energy management difficult for drivers.
The Madring circuit impresses with its variety of corners, including the daunting Monumental curve. However, its demanding design forces drivers to frequently lift off and modulate the throttle. With the current generation of power units, this triggers energy imbalances. Instead of gaining an advantage, aggressive drivers are penalized as the battery drains faster.
Current regulations require the electric motor to deliver at least 200 kW (100 kW in races) for one second whenever speed exceeds 210 km/h and the throttle is fully applied. Consequently, when drivers reapply the throttle after lifting, energy consumption spikes, disrupting energy management over a lap. The FIA has stepped in.
In a document released Friday evening, the FIA revised the hybrid rules. They added several corners to the exceptions list. Now, turns 7-8 and 10-11 are included, where the control electronics can cut electric power immediately without waiting one second. Turns 15-16 were already exempt, and the 18-19 section has been extended to include turn 21. Additionally, the speed threshold for activating the electric motor has been raised in certain areas.
These changes aim to give drivers more freedom to explore the limit without worrying about running out of energy. Thus, they can be more daring in corners without sacrificing straight-line speed. Madring witnesses how the FIA adapts to the challenges of a modern circuit.
The impact is expected to intensify on-track battles. Drivers who were previously hesitant to push can now be more aggressive. Teams must also adjust their energy strategies. The race at Madring will test the FIA's ability to balance technical regulations with the circuit's demands.
