Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, has openly admitted that sporting fairness was severely impacted as a direct result of a human error during the sprint qualifying session at the Singapore Grand Prix. The dramatic sequence of events unfolded following a red flag deployed for debris after Sergio Perez crashed in the opening phase of sprint qualifying on Friday.
A critical miscalculation from race control resulted in an unexpected power disparity near the conclusion of SQ1. The FIA briefly reactivated Overtake Mode—a performance tool giving drivers an extra boost—for just 27 seconds before shutting it down again in a frantic move that completely altered the competitive landscape.
This misstep meant some drivers completed their crucial flying laps with the unexpected power advantage, while others suffered from noticeably less power than anticipated. The blunder sparked intense frustration throughout the paddock and immediate backlash from competitors.

Williams driver Carlos Sainz launched a scathing accusation against the governing body, claiming they showed no regard for sporting equity after being eliminated in SQ1, leaving him languishing down in 22nd place on the grid for the sprint race.
Speaking to Sky Germany, FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis candidly admitted the blunder interfered with the final results and represented the worst-case scenario for the organization. "We're not happy about it, because it affected some drivers more and some drivers less," Tombazis stated, emphasizing that fairness and safety remain their highest priorities.
Elaborating on the technical lapse, Tombazis revealed that re-enabling the system is normally a manual safety protocol. Unfortunately, a computer pop-up window was ignored under intense time pressure, leading to an erroneous decision to briefly toggle it back on before disabling it once more.
