Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur faced intense media scrutiny following the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay circuit, addressing the controversial strategy gamble made by Lewis Hamilton. Starting from a strong position on the grid, the British driver's decision to stay out during the Virtual Safety Car period to execute a massive 44-lap stint on soft tyres ultimately derailed his race and dropped him down the order.
Over the final 22 laps following the race neutralization, Hamilton suffered an alarming pace deficit, losing an average of 2.5 seconds per lap relative to his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc. This massive drop-off in performance caused him to plummet from third to sixth place at the checkered flag, finishing behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
With the unwell British driver excused from post-race media commitments to visit the medical center, Vasseur was left to answer difficult questions regarding how the high-level strategy call was authorized. The French team boss initially attempted to deflect questions before detailing the exact radio communication that transpired on the pit wall when the VSC was deployed.
Hamilton later took full blame for the strategy error through a team-issued statement, describing the Marina Bay setback as a painful lesson. Having opted to start on new medium tyres to attempt a long one-stop strategy on a track notoriously difficult for overtaking, the seasoned champion admitted that the gamble simply did not pay off.
Vasseur insisted that the pit wall's initial call for both cars to pit during the VSC was explicit, but acknowledged the complex dynamic of balancing telemetry data against a driver's instantaneous feeling from inside the cockpit. While labelling the decision a clear mistake, Vasseur maintained that engineers must also respect the instincts of drivers on the limit.
