Fernando Alonso launched a scathing attack on Alex Albon following their opening-lap collision at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The two-time world champion claimed the aggressive move severely ruined Aston Martin's hard-earned chances of securing valuable championship points.
The heavy contact on the opening tour inflicted massive structural damage to the floor of the Spaniard's charger. Despite the severe aerodynamic handicap that went unpunished by the race stewards, the veteran driver remarkably managed to drag the wounded machine home in 16th position.
I think we lost half a second or more, the car is destroyed, Alonso told reporters in the Austin paddock after the race. I saw it in parc ferme. Half of the floor is not there. I don't know how we kept on going and how we were semi-competitive.

Expressing his deep frustration, the veteran racer did not hold back when assessing the driving standards among competitors operating at the rear of the Formula 1 grid during congested early-lap scraps.
I think when you start at the back, there is this risk always, Alonso added. I think the quality of the drivers in the lower third of the grid is very low, as we saw today with Alex. I think we need to improve the car and start a little bit higher up.
Meanwhile, Albon offered a contrasting perspective regarding the wheel-to-wheel combat that left both drivers tumbling down the final classification order outside the points-scoring positions.
It's always fun to race Fernando, Albon stated. He's strong but he's fair always. Maybe he thought I was a bit over the edge, I don't know. I'm sure I'll find out soon. But I had a good amount of fun, I think.
