Fernando Alonso Backs IndyCar Barcelona 2027 But Warns On Costs

Fernando Alonso has welcomed IndyCar's decision to host a championship round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2027. The two-time Formula 1 world champion believes that bringing the premier North American open-wheel series to Spain is a historic milestone for local motorsport, providing a massive home race opportunity for Spanish drivers.

The official announcement confirmed that the inaugural IndyCar Grand Prix of Barcelona is scheduled for July 16-18, 2027, under a multi-year agreement. This landmark event marks the series' first appearance in Europe since 2007 and its first race outside North America since 2013, serving as a major highlight of the championship's upcoming schedule.

Speaking ahead of the Formula 1 race weekend at the Circuit of The Americas, the Aston Martin veteran emphasized the irreplaceable value of permanent circuits in supporting motorsport infrastructure and driver development across various junior categories in Spain.

"I think it's going to be good. Obviously a historic event for our country and Barcelona," Alonso stated. He further highlighted the unique advantage of conventional tracks, noting their capability to host testing sessions year-round alongside major international racing series ranging from endurance championships to premier motorcycle events.

However, when addressing the broader topic of international expansion, the seasoned Spaniard issued a cautious note regarding the financial implications. Drawing from his extensive experience in Formula 1, he warned that a heavy global calendar drastically escalates travel expenditures and operational logistics for competing teams.

"IndyCar is very specific to the US market. One of the things that is more penalizing in F1 for the drivers and for the teams, and the cost they go very high when you travel around the world. So it has some benefits and some downsides," Alonso explained, suggesting that the series should primarily maintain its focus on the domestic US market.
