Fernando Alonso brought Sprint Qualifying for the 2026 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix to a halt after crashing his Aston Martin at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The incident occurred while the Spaniard was fighting to secure a place in SQ2 amid an intensely competitive midfield battle.

Alonso locked the front-left tyre on the approach to Turn 3, sending his AMR26 straight into the TecPro barrier. With limited run-off available at the Montreal venue, there was little opportunity to avoid contact once the lock-up occurred. Although the impact itself was not severe, the damage to the barrier required repairs, prompting race control to suspend the session with a red flag.

At the time of the accident, Alonso was running 14th on the timing screens and remained vulnerable to elimination. The pressure to extract additional lap time appeared to play a significant role as the two-time world champion pushed the limits of both himself and the car in an effort to advance.

The incident also highlighted Aston Martin's apparent pace deficit during Sprint Qualifying. The Silverstone-based team struggled to match the speed of several midfield rivals, forcing Alonso to take greater risks under braking and through corner entry. Such a scenario often leaves drivers operating with minimal margin for error, particularly on a circuit where aggressive kerb usage and heavy braking zones are critical to lap time.

"Yeah, sorry. Lock up, mate," Alonso told his team over the radio immediately after the crash.

Speaking later, Alonso admitted the team had been attempting to achieve a result beyond the car's natural performance level.

"I locked up the front, and there is no room to avoid anything here in Canada. Too much on the limit. We are a little behind with the pace, so we were pushing seven or eight places more than we should have."

The stoppage marked the fourth red flag of the day in Montreal. Earlier incidents involved Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls, who suffered a hydraulic failure during FP1, while Alex Albon of Williams Racing crashed after striking a marmot. Haas F1 Team driver Esteban Ocon also hit the wall late in practice. The series of incidents underlined the demanding nature of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, where limited sprint-format preparation continues to expose teams and drivers to costly mistakes.
