Fernando Alonso Admits Frustration Despite Interlagos Qualifying Heroics

Fernando Alonso dreamed of a top-five qualifying finish

Treacherous weather conditions sweeping across the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos for the Formula 1 weekend sparked major drama, shining a light on Fernando Alonso. The two-time world champion capitalized on torrential downpours that leveled the playing field, showcasing his supreme racecraft by dragging his uncompetitive machine into Q3 for the very first time this season.

As the track began showing signs of improvement during the pole position shootout, the veteran Spanish driver made a bold strategic gamble. He became the first competitor to bolt on intermediate tires, a decision that ultimately secured him ninth place on the starting grid and offered a much-needed morale boost for the entire team.

Yet, satisfaction was not entirely on the Spaniard's mind after the session concluded. He openly admitted to feeling a sense of missed opportunity, firmly believing that a top-five starting slot was well within reach had the execution during the frantic closing moments of Q3 been handled with absolute perfection.

"It was tough but I thought that we were maximising the performance on the full wets, the lap was good enough, I couldn't maybe repeat it," Alonso told Sky Sports F1 regarding his decisive switch to intermediates. He further explained that staying on wet tires would have left them stranded outside the top ten anyway, making the gamble a necessary risk.

Detailing the specific technical hurdles he faced during those crucial moments, Alonso expressed his disappointment clearly. "Yes, absolutely. I was first in the queue and I thought maybe it gives us the possibility to be top four or five if the rain comes. But the intensity was not as strong as we thought, so the weather held for two timed laps for everybody. On the first lap I had the tyres ice cold with no grip at all, and on the second I used a lot of deployment on lap one thinking it was only one lap qualifying," he added.

Benefiting from a grid penalty applied to Charles Leclerc, the Aston Martin driver will now line up eighth on Sunday. With dry-weather pace remaining a notable struggle throughout the weekend, mixed conditions on race day present a golden opportunity to bolster their meager points tally from the opening nineteen rounds.
