MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Fermin Aldeguer has emerged as a central figure in the evolving MotoGP rider market ahead of 2027, with strong indications linking him to Valentino Rossi’s VR46 Racing Team as part of a broader structural shift within the Ducati ecosystem.
This development is closely tied to the situation at Gresini Racing, where reigning championship runner-up Alex Marquez has long been associated with a potential move to the factory KTM squad. Should that transition materialise, it would trigger a redistribution of riders within Ducati’s satellite structure, positioning Aldeguer as a primary candidate.
Reports from AS.com indicate that Ducati is expected to activate its contractual option on Aldeguer, but place him within VR46 as a factory-supported satellite entry. This aligns with Ducati’s established strategy of managing young talent across its network while maintaining competitive balance between teams.

Aldeguer begins his 2026 MotoGP campaign in Goiania after missing pre-season testing and the Thai Grand Prix due to a femur fracture sustained during winter training. The delayed start introduces additional complexity in assessing his performance baseline, particularly in comparison with riders who have accumulated more track data.
If confirmed, the move would see Aldeguer become the first non-Italian rider to compete for VR46. Such a scenario would necessitate a line-up change, with either Fabio di Giannantonio or Franco Morbidelli making way.
VR46 had previously targeted Pedro Acosta, but the current championship leader is now widely expected to move into Ducati’s factory team, potentially alongside Marc Marquez. This shift further intensifies the rider market dynamics ahead of the 2027 season.
From a performance perspective, Gresini has maintained a strong record since switching from Aprilia to Ducati machinery in 2022, with every rider signed by the team achieving at least one MotoGP race victory. The team has also served as a pathway for riders such as Enea Bastianini and Marc Marquez to progress into the factory Ducati Lenovo structure.
However, uncertainty extends beyond rider placements. Gresini has yet to formally extend its agreement with Ducati beyond the 2026 season, adding another layer of complexity to the future grid composition.
On the technical front, MotoGP will enter a new regulatory era in 2027 with the introduction of 850cc engines, requiring all manufacturers to develop entirely new machinery. In this context, positioning emerging riders like Aldeguer within competitive satellite teams becomes critical for accelerating development feedback and data acquisition.
Additionally, Aldeguer and Morbidelli remain the only Ducati riders not competing on full factory-spec GP26 machinery in 2026, meaning their performance must be evaluated within the context of technical disparity relative to factory entries.
With multiple converging factors—including rider contracts, manufacturer strategies, and regulatory changes—the potential move of Fermin Aldeguer to VR46 represents a significant step in Ducati’s long-term competitive planning.
MotoGP now continues into the next phase of the season, where the performance of emerging riders like Aldeguer will play a decisive role in shaping the final grid structure for 2027.
