The MotoGP Qatar race weekend at the Lusail International Circuit delivered major drama following a horrific crash involving Fermin Aldeguer and Pecco Bagnaia. The harrowing incident took place at turn 16 during the opening lap of the sprint race, forcing race control to immediately throw the red flag.
Prior to the terrifying collision, the young Gresini Racing hopeful had fought hard to secure his spot through the qualifying sessions. After struggling during Friday's practice sessions, he successfully topped Q1 to earn a respectable ninth place on the starting grid for the main events.
However, disaster struck as the field rushed into the final corner on the opening lap. The Spanish rider misjudged his braking point, slamming violently into the rear of Bagnaia's Ducati and sending the Italian rider flying through the air.
The impact left the factory Ducati rider with severe injuries, requiring a medical evacuation and a swift flight back to Italy for further treatment. Meanwhile, race stewards handed Aldeguer a double long-lap penalty as the sprint race was restarted over a shortened distance.
Reflecting on the controversy that dominated the paddock chatter, the young rider took full accountability for his error. "I want to apologize to Pecco and his entire team. I made a mistake during an overtaking attempt, and I am truly sorry for that," Aldeguer stated after fighting his way back to finish eleventh.
