Feeney and Schumacher claimed a dramatic victory in the Sydney GT finale after capitalizing on late-race issues for leaders Wood/Brooks. The #1 Audi R8 crew finished 2.9 seconds ahead of Leitch/Pires in the #44 Mercedes-AMG.
Race Story
When the lights went out, Peroni jumped ahead of his Team BRM teammate Wood. Behind them, Ojeda struggled for grip in the opening corner, dropping from third to fifth. Leitch, Ojeda’s Tigani Motorsport stablemate, surged to third, with Feeney following.
Just a lap later, Wood fought back to the lead after wheel-to-wheel contact through Turn 3. Leitch made a forceful dive at Turn 5 to take second from the Audi. Peroni, struggling for pace, soon came under pressure from Feeney and Ojeda. Feeney, the reigning champion, eventually passed Peroni at Turn 1 just before the pit window. Ojeda also attempted a move, but heavy contact with the rear of Peroni’s Audi sent bodywork flying.
Wood had built a lead of over 10 seconds, but the compulsory pit stop erased his advantage. Brooks took over and emerged in the lead, but disaster struck when the car stopped on the run to Turn 9 with a driveline issue, triggering a safety car. Brooks managed to get going but headed straight to the pits, handing the lead to Schumacher.
Schumacher led the restart and pulled away from Pires. Meanwhile, Campbell, who had been running third, spun at Turn 3 and tumbled out of the top 10. Rosser and Gracie, both on fresh tires, struggled to keep pace.
It was heartbreak for Wood/Brooks, who lost a likely win. But for Feeney/Schumacher, it was a sweet victory after their Race 1 DNF due to engine failure. Astuti/Currie in the #2 Audi took their first GTWC podium, completing a double podium for Team MPC.
With this result, Feeney/Schumacher strengthen their championship position, while Wood/Brooks must regroup for the next race.
