Repsol Honda rider, Luca Marini, has been handed a three-place grid penalty for Sunday's Italian MotoGP race at the Mugello Circuit. The sanction was issued by the FIM Stewards after Marini was found guilty of riding slow on the racing line and disturbing trailing riders during the final practice session. The incident unfolded as he suddenly decelerated to peel off the track and head into the pit lane without providing clear visual intentions.
This unexpected move forced Franco Morbidelli and Jorge Martin, who were directly behind him, to take immediate avoiding action. Martin was seen raising his hand in frustration to warn other oncoming riders of the hazard on the high-speed section. Due to this safety protocol breach, Marini's qualifying position will drop significantly from 16th to 19th on the starting grid for the main Grand Prix.
Looking at his current position in the world championship standings, this penalty adds to a mountain of difficulties for the Italian, who remains anchored to the lower half of the leaderboard due to ongoing machine development woes. Marini has consistently struggled to break into the top ten in both qualifying and race trim since the opening round. Starting further back heavily compromises his target of securing crucial constructors points for the Japanese manufacturer.

Leg Signal Debate with Chief Steward Simon Crafar
Marini admitted he was initially surprised by the penalty and engaged in an extensive discussion with Chairman of the FIM MotoGP Stewards panel, Simon Crafar, before eventually accepting the verdict. The stewards clarified that Marini should have extended his leg out as a universal signal to inform following riders that he was dropping out of active competition toward the pit lane entrance.
While accepting the final decision, Marini offered a technical counter-argument, stating that a leg signal would have been physically blocked from Morbidelli's view due to the left-hand nature of the corner. Nonetheless, the Italian chose to move past the debate and focus on adjusting his safety communication procedures. The incident highlights the strict enforcement of track safety protocols at high-speed venues like Mugello.
Unresolved Traction Crisis Crushing the Honda RC213V
Aside from the grid penalty, Marini emphasized that his primary technical limitation remains the severe lack of stability on his machine during qualifying trim. The prototype sasis is moving excessively under heavy load when pushed to its absolute limit. This high-frequency movement triggers the electronics to aggressively cut power delivery to prevent a highside.
This electronic intervention completely castrates his corner exit acceleration and worsens tyre degradation as the rear wheel struggles to find consistent drive. Despite the qualifying setback, Marini found some optimism after recovering to 13th in the Sprint Race with an improved launch and sharp overtaking maneuvers. Meanwhile, rookie Diogo Moreira finished as the leading representative for the brand by securing an impressive tenth place.
