Fabio Quartararo has spoken out. This isn't just a team switch; it's about finding joy on a motorcycle again. After a grueling 2026 season with Yamaha, the French rider finally admitted what many had suspected: he's no longer enjoying racing.
“Honestly, I'm not really having fun,” Fabio Quartararo told Crash.net at Silverstone. “I'm a really competitive guy. Even when I push my maximum, like at the Sachsenring – maybe my second-best weekend – I don't enjoy seeing people pass me, I can't overtake, even though I know I can be faster in one lap.”
That moment was a turning point. After eight seasons in the premier class, including a glorious 2021 title, Yamaha has slumped. He hasn't won since 2022. Yamaha tried to bounce back with a V4 engine for 2026, but results have fallen short of expectations.
“I expected it to be much better than now, especially after the first test in Barcelona,” he said. “But the problem was that from September to November we made no progress. Our package now is almost the same as the first bike I rode.”
The decision to move to Honda might seem like jumping from one problem to another. But for Quartararo, there's something different about the HRC project. “I see many things, on and off track, that are different,” he explained. “New rules, new bike, it's a gamble. But I've seen the progress they're making with the 2027 bike. As a kid, I had two dream teams, and this is like a dream.”
Honda is serious. They hired Romano Albesiano as technical director, added Aleix Espargaro and Takaaki Nakagami to the test team, and Davide Brivio is expected to join. Marc Marquez even highlighted the Quartararo-Honda combination as one to watch if the bike is competitive.
“I'm really happy to hear comments from other riders, especially Marc, because he's the fastest, the best in my opinion,” Quartararo concluded. “I'm really looking forward to this new project and trying to enjoy racing again.”
