Lando Norris voiced intense frustration after securing only eighth place in the qualifying session for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas. The McLaren driver felt he had performed a very poor job despite believing that his MCL40 machinery possessed the genuine pace to fight for a front-row start on Sunday.
The major setback occurred when his second run in Q3, which initially elevated him to sixth position, was deleted by race control due to a track-limits infringement at Turn 19. Consequently, he was demoted back to eighth based on the lap time recorded during his initial run in the final qualifying segment.
This misfortune continues a challenging phase for the Woking-based squad, which has missed out on podium finishes over the last three grand prix weekends. Despite straight-line speed limitations and struggles in slow-speed corners, the British driver insisted that a much stronger result was well within reach in Austin.

"The car was very strong today in terms of pace," he said. "Insanely difficult to drive. Probably the hardest car I've ever had to drive in my life. But good enough for P2, so I should be P2 and I'm P8, so clearly, I did a very bad job today."
The frustration is compounded by the fact that the team introduced the first phase of its final major upgrade package of the year in Texas, featuring revised front suspension geometry and a modified diffuser profile. However, optimizing these new aerodynamic and mechanical traits continues to prove extraordinarily difficult.
According to Motorsport.com, although he qualified roughly a second adrift of polesitter Kimi Antonelli and behind Max Verstappen, he maintains firm belief that a solid points haul remains entirely possible during Sunday's main race.
