Formula 1's decision to introduce a sprint format at the Monaco Grand Prix in 2027 has sparked fierce debate among fans and paddock insiders. The iconic street circuit, known for its narrowness and difficulty in overtaking, must now adapt to a format that typically delivers more intense racing action. Ronald Vording, one of our journalists, admits he is still not a huge fan of the sprint format. Nevertheless, he understands its commercial appeal. "I have to admit that I am still not the biggest fan of the sprint format, although perhaps a slightly less fervent opponent than I was a few years ago. You get used to everything, I suppose, although if given the choice I would still prefer a traditional race weekend," he says. However, he adds that the commercial benefits of sprint weekends are clear: Fridays and Saturdays become more attractive for promoters as ticket buyers get more action with sessions that actually matter.
The main focus is the consequence of the sprint format: two qualifying sessions. In Monaco, qualifying is always the most thrilling moment as drivers push the limits, getting incredibly close to the barriers. With a sprint, the weekend will feature two qualifying sessions, meaning double the adrenaline. "Logically, the format also means two qualifying sessions, and that is precisely what tipped the balance for Monaco. In that respect, next year we will get the best that Monaco has to offer twice," Vording explains.
However, Vording warns that this actually takes away some of the charm of the Monaco weekend. "The Monaco race weekend is all about the gradual build-up towards the absolute highlight, one of the finest moments of the F1 season. It is about watching the drivers get a little closer to the walls with every practice session before that one climax on Saturday afternoon," he says. He describes how in FP1 drivers deliberately leave some margin, but by FP3 they are increasingly searching for the limit at places such as Piscine and Tabac. "It is flirting with risk, a balancing act between building confidence and wanting too much, too soon. And it is a balancing act that can go wrong – just ask Max Verstappen, who crashed during final practice in 2018 and had to miss qualifying," he recalls.
Impact on Strategy and Competition
With the sprint format, teams must adopt different strategies. There are no longer long free practice sessions to perfect the car setup. Drivers and engineers must adapt quickly, especially at a circuit that demands bravery like Monaco. Lewis Hamilton, who has experienced many racing formats, might be one of the drivers who benefits most due to his experience. However, the risk of accidents increases, and that could ruin the race.
On the other hand, fans might welcome the additional on-track action. Expensive tickets in Monaco will at least provide more competitive sessions. But is that enough to offset the loss of Monaco's unique weekend? Formula 1 seems to be taking a gamble. We will have to wait and see whether the Monaco sprint will be a thrilling spectacle or a bore due to the difficulty of overtaking.
This decision also raises questions about whether sprint is suitable for all circuits. Monaco is a unique case, and perhaps this experiment will serve as a benchmark for other street circuits.
