Inspired by the banked La Monumental corner, the trophy has sparked a mix of reactions, from praise to humorous comparisons with the Spanish snack, churros.
This weekend's Spanish Grand Prix marks the series' first visit to the semi-street circuit. The curved, silver trophy features the track map as its cross-section, outlined in red. The design pays homage to the legendary La Monumental corner, even though the circuit has never hosted a race.
Fan reactions have been varied. On Reddit, one user commented, "Looks like a churro," prompting another to reply, "I love that they must have brainstormed and engineered this thing for months, if not years, and one guy on Reddit says it looks like a churro and from now on it is the churro trophy." Another added humor by referencing Kimi Antonelli eating spaghetti out of his Italian Grand Prix trophy. "If Kimi wins, he should put chocolate into his bowl trophy and dip this trophy in," they wrote.
Not all comments were negative. Some fans praised the design. "The forging process for this would be super cool to see," one netizen said. Another commented, "Great-looking trophy. Cross-section of the course map and the curve of La Monumental. Great design overall. Much better than the Monza trophy. Obviously inspired by the Monaco trophy."
However, some criticized the naming of the La Monumental corner for lacking historical significance. "Naming a turn 'La monumental' of a circuit that hasn’t hosted a single second of any kind of race, let alone F1, as if it had any historical significance, is certainly a bit bold," one user wrote.
Regardless of the divided opinions, the trophy has succeeded in capturing attention and generating buzz ahead of the race. Fans will see cars on track for the first time in Madrid on Friday, 11 September, for the first two practice sessions. The Spanish Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, 13 September.
The unique trophy design also reflects how F1 is attempting to integrate local culture into a global event. By combining traditional and modern elements, the trophy is expected to become a new icon for the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.
