Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Formula 1 will return to the Nürburgring in April 2026 as McLaren and Mercedes are confirmed to conduct a tyre test for Pirelli during the championship’s unofficial spring break.

The two-day test is scheduled for April 14–15 and will take place on the modern Grand Prix layout in use since 2002, rather than the full Nordschleife configuration. The programme is focused on dry-tyre development, supporting Pirelli’s ongoing efforts to adapt its products to the technical demands of the 2026 Formula 1 regulations.

This marks the first time current-generation Formula 1 machinery will run in Germany since 2020, when the Nürburgring hosted the Eifel Grand Prix during the pandemic-affected season. Historically, Germany has been one of Formula 1’s core venues, with races held consistently at Nürburgring and Hockenheim throughout much of the championship’s history.

The involvement of McLaren and Mercedes forms part of Pirelli’s official in-season testing structure. Under current regulations, teams are prohibited from conducting performance-focused testing, but must support tyre development by supplying cars and drivers when required. These sessions are distributed across the season, allowing Pirelli to gather critical data.

“Such programmes are essential to ensure tyre performance aligns with the evolving demands of the 2026 cars, particularly in terms of load distribution and increased acceleration forces,” within the context of Pirelli’s development objectives.

For 2026, Formula 1 tyres feature revised dimensions, with both front and rear tyres narrower than in the previous season. While construction and compound philosophy remain broadly consistent, adjustments are required to accommodate changes in aerodynamic load and power unit characteristics, particularly with increased hybrid deployment.

Separately, Pirelli will conduct a wet-weather tyre test at Fiorano on April 9–10, with Ferrari supplying the test car. This programme operates independently from the Nürburgring test and focuses on improving performance and safety in wet conditions.

Looking ahead, Pirelli’s position as Formula 1’s sole tyre supplier is secured through 2027, with an option to extend into 2028. While long-term supplier dynamics remain under consideration, the immediate priority is ensuring tyre readiness for the new regulatory cycle.

The return of Formula 1 activity to the Nürburgring is therefore not only symbolic, but also a critical component of the sport’s technical development phase, with outcomes from this test expected to influence competitive performance as the 2026 season progresses into its next stage.
