The outcome of the appeal lodged by McLaren and Red Bull over the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix result is expected within two to three weeks, following a closed-door hearing in Paris on Tuesday. At stake is whether Pierre Gasly keeps his podium finish.
Both teams are contesting the stewards' decision to reverse a five-second penalty for Gasly, which had initially dropped him from third place. The appeal could have significant implications for the championship standings and set a precedent for future rulings.
The controversy stems from a pit lane speed limit violation involving six drivers, including Oscar Piastri. All received identical penalties, but while most served theirs during the race, Alpine opted to keep Gasly out on track, meaning his penalty was added to his race time instead.
Gasly was initially demoted, but Alpine's protest succeeded after the FIA admitted an erroneous timing loop reading had affected the speed measurements. This reinstated Gasly to the podium, sparking outrage from McLaren and Red Bull, who argue the decision was unjust.
During the hearing, one key argument was that the stewards overstepped their authority by altering the race classification. If accepted, this could be a game-changer, as the International Court of Appeal has previously ruled on similar matters in the Optimum Motorsport case.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella emphasized that the appeal is not just about his team's interests but also about upholding the sport's integrity. "We go to the hearing with a double intent: the general interest for Formula 1 and the sport, and the material interest for McLaren in terms of championship impact," he told media including Motorsport Week at Zandvoort.
If Alpine loses this appeal, they will have no further legal options. The motorsport world now awaits the verdict with bated breath, as it could reshape the rules of engagement for teams in future disputes.
