The pressure mounted quickly for Andrea Kimi Antonelli during the Malaysian Grand Prix qualifying session as track limits caught him out. The Formula 1 championship leader saw his initial Q2 lap time deleted after pushing too hard at Turn 6, forcing a reactive strategy shift.
That early mistake depleted his fresh soft tyre allocation, leaving the Italian rookie with a solitary, cautious run in Q3. Instead of extracting maximum performance, he had to dial back his aggression to avoid another costly trip beyond the white lines.
Fortunately for Mercedes, a grid penalty for Isack Hadjar acts as a silver lining, bumping the youngster up from fourth to third on the starting grid. Still, the underlying performance puzzle remains unsolved as the team works to unlock the true potential of their latest technical package in the demanding heat of Sepang.

Reflecting on the session, the championship leader admitted that finding the right operating window with the new components on abrasive asphalt has proven tricky, leaving them with plenty of homework ahead of lights out.
