Liam Lawson faces mounting uncertainty over his Formula 1 future after Racing Bulls officially announced that Nikola Tsolov will replace him during the opening practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

This development arrives despite Lawson enjoying a strong second full-time campaign in the pinnacle of motorsport, consistently finishing inside the points and even stepping up to represent Red Bull during a three-race stint earlier in the year.

However, exceptional performances across the Red Bull junior pipeline have put the incumbent driver under pressure. The rapid rise of rookie competitors and Tsolov's stellar maiden season in Formula 2 have created a complex driver market puzzle for the Faenza-based squad.

Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane addressed the ongoing speculation, emphasizing that the organization is in no immediate rush to finalize their driver pairing for the upcoming championship years.

“I don't want to give you a definite date. It's going to be in the coming weeks, let's say,” Alan Permane stated when discussing the timeframe for the final decision.

Alan Permane further explained, “I mean, we're in no rush. I think everyone knows we've got two fantastic drivers. We've got a fantastic driver in F2 at the moment, and they're all there and ready to go.”

“But three doesn't fit into two, of course, and we're just going to take a little bit more time and make sure we get the right pairing for next year,” he added regarding the difficult choices ahead.

For Tsolov, stepping into the VCARB machinery for Friday morning's running represents a massive milestone following a dominant campaign in F2 with Campos Racing, where the Bulgarian youngster secured multiple race victories.

“A big thank you to VCARB for giving me this opportunity in Mexico,” Nikola Tsolov said following the team's official announcement.

“Following my test with the team at Imola in August, I’m excited to take this next step, build on that experience and learn more about the car and the current regulations.”

“I’ll focus on making the most of the session, working closely with the team and providing useful feedback,” he concluded ahead of his official grand prix weekend debut.
