Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell leads the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship standings after securing victory at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne. The Mercedes driver claimed the full 25 points available, placing him at the top of the drivers’ standings after the first round of the season.
The race outcome was strongly influenced by strategy decisions from Ferrari, which opted not to pit either Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton during two Virtual Safety Car periods. That strategic call ultimately allowed Mercedes to gain track position and control the race during the final stages in Melbourne.
Russell converted the opportunity into victory while teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured second place, completing a one-two finish for Mercedes in the opening race of the 2026 championship. Leclerc finished third ahead of Hamilton, while Lando Norris delivered a fifth-place result for McLaren.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished sixth for Red Bull after a challenging weekend that began with difficulties in qualifying. Meanwhile, manufacturer newcomer Audi secured its first Formula 1 points through Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, who finished ninth.
The result leaves Russell leading the drivers’ standings with 25 points, followed by Antonelli with 18 and Leclerc with 15. In the constructors’ championship, Mercedes holds the early advantage with 43 points after one round, ahead of Ferrari with 27 points as the season moves toward the next event on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
