The technical regulations for the 2026 Formula 1 season faced hidden friction long before the cars hit the track. FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis revealed that critical issues surrounding the new power units were already evident in simulation data years in advance, yet certain manufacturers fiercely opposed changing the rules.
Speaking in an interview with FormulaPassion, Tombazis explained that simulations clearly flagged upcoming energy management flaws, prompting calls for early corrective action. Unfortunately, sporting interests clashed heavily with commercial priorities, leaving engineering concerns sidelined by stubborn stakeholders.
The strict governance structure established toward the end of 2022 proved to be a major roadblock for the governing body. Any amendments required formal voting procedures involving the FIA, FOM, and a specific threshold of team and engine manufacturer approvals.
This bureaucratic gridlock mirrored public paddock tensions between 2023 and 2024. Figures such as Max Verstappen and Christian Horner openly voiced concerns regarding abnormal power unit behavior experienced in simulator runs. Meanwhile, counterparts like Toto Wolff initially resisted calls to alter the thermal and electrical power balance, citing development paths already locked in by Mercedes.
Despite the turbulent development phase, Tombazis defended the massive regulatory overhaul as a necessary evil. Without a bold transition to the 2026 power units, Formula 1 faced the grim prospect of losing engine manufacturers entirely, potentially leaving the grid reliant on just a couple of suppliers.
