Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has reaffirmed that MotoGP still plans to hold the Qatar Grand Prix on 8 November, despite ongoing uncertainty caused by the prolonged conflict in the Middle East that has forced several motorsport events to seek alternative venues.
Ezpeleta revealed that communication with Qatari authorities remains intense. "Right now, the idea is to go. We are regularly in contact with Qatar, the authorities tell us they are willing to organise it, and if nothing changes radically, the idea is that we will indeed go," he told DAZN.
Impact on Title Fight
Qatar is scheduled to be the 20th round of the season. With the championship battle intensifying, every point could prove decisive. The cancellation of a race could alter the balance of power, especially if the points gap at the top is minimal. Ezpeleta acknowledged this and stressed that a final decision will be made soon if conditions allow.
Furthermore, confirmation regarding Qatar will also affect the 2027 MotoGP calendar. Ezpeleta said the 2027 calendar will be announced "very soon, probably next week or immediately afterwards," and hopes it can be released before the Asian tour begins in Japan in early October.
For context, the Qatar GP was originally scheduled for 12 April but was postponed to November due to the conflict. MotoGP itself has not announced any plans to cancel. Meanwhile, Formula 1 has already released its 2027 schedule, and Qatar has traditionally hosted the MotoGP season opener in recent years.
With tensions still high, fans are hoping the race at Losail Circuit can go ahead. However, everyone is waiting for developments in the region's security situation. Ezpeleta and the Dorna team will continue to monitor closely before making a final decision.
