Live broadcasting innovation in the World Rally Championship took a significant leap forward following the successful debut of a specialized helmet camera worn by Jon Armstrong during the rally in Sardinia. This cutting-edge technology, designed to provide a first-person perspective directly from the cockpit, has been under intensive development since 2024. The strategic move mirrors the successful adoption of similar visual technology first introduced in Formula 1 back in 2021, which has since become an established staple of modern motorsport broadcasting.
The compact camera device was put through its initial paces during Thursday morning’s shakedown session. The immersive footage captured from the driver's viewpoint was seamlessly integrated into live television broadcasts throughout the weekend, offering fans an unprecedented level of proximity to the high-speed action. This technological addition effectively bridges the gap between viewers at home and the intense reality inside a rally car.
The visual perspective delivered by the helmet camera is engineered to replicate the driver's actual line of sight with remarkable precision. Experienced Norwegian driver Mads Østberg, who boasts 139 WRC career starts, admitted he was thoroughly impressed after watching the live television broadcast of the shakedown.

Reacting instantly during the live broadcast feed, the seasoned contender shared his genuine excitement about the new perspective. "That’s really cool," Østberg immediately reacted during the broadcast, highlighting the massive entertainment value for fans tuning in worldwide. He further emphasized the realism of the footage, noting, "It looks exactly like driving the car."
On the other hand, Jon Armstrong confirmed that wearing the camera equipment did not disrupt his focus or hinder his driving capabilities across the demanding gravel tracks of Sardinia. "You wouldn’t know that it’s there," he stated, reassuring teams and organizers about the ergonomic success of the trial ahead of its planned expansion.
