After finishing as the championship runner-up on five agonizing occasions, Elfyn Evans finally clinched his maiden World Rally Championship title alongside co-pilot Scott Martin at Rally Italia Sardegna. However, while the celebrations of their 2026 triumph are still echoing, the newly crowned world champion faces an unexpected dilemma regarding which number will adorn his factory Toyota machine next season.
Tradition dictates that the reigning world champion carries the prestigious number '1' on their door, just as Sebastien Ogier did throughout the 2026 campaign following his 2025 crown. Yet, Evans and his co-pilot find themselves surprisingly divided on whether to embrace tradition or stick with personal branding.
'We are still discussing the decision,' the 37-year-old Welshman explained. 'Actually, I would prefer the "33", but Scott is more keen on the number "1". We still have to sort that out between us.'

The reluctance to part ways with his traditional number stems from a deep personal connection. Number 33 has evolved far beyond a mere identifier on a car door for Evans; it is a core piece of his motorsport identity. When rotated 180 degrees, the digits form the initials 'EE', linking the number intrinsically to his name and career journey.
Such attachment to personal numbers is not entirely unprecedented in top-tier motorsport. Former world champion Kalle Rovanpera notably opted to bypass the number '1' in favor of his trademark '69' during his title defense years. In motorcycle racing, legendary icon Valentino Rossi famously turned his '46' into a global phenomenon.
While the number debate continues behind closed doors, preparations for the 2027 technical era are already in full swing. Following recent test sessions in Portugal aboard the new WRC27 regulations car, Evans is set for a homecoming celebration in Dolgellau before fully shifting his focus to defending his hard-earned crown.
