Why Liam Lawson's Red Bull Return Looks Much Smoother in 2026

Liam Lawson's return to Red Bull at the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix was more than just a stand-in for the injured Isack Hadjar. It was a redemption arc, 18 months after being dropped following just two races. At Zandvoort, Lawson impressed by shadowing Max Verstappen in qualifying, taking P8 and finishing only 0.1s behind his teammate.

The contrast with his 2025 debut in Australia, where he started 18th, could not be starker. This time, Lawson arrived better prepared, with more race experience and a deeper understanding of the 2026 machinery. He also enjoyed full team support, boosting his confidence and comfort in the cockpit.

"It's been very challenging to build up in a short space of time, but the target was to keep improving through the weekend," Lawson said. "I feel like I extracted pretty much everything I had out of the car. I tried to get as close to Max as possible and learn from him. Today we executed well."

Another key factor is reduced pressure. In 2025, Lawson faced sky-high expectations and constant comparisons with Verstappen. Now, as a temporary replacement, he is free to perform without baggage. He also knows the team's dynamics and engineering better.

Red Bull's choice of Lawson over rookie Arvid Lindblad or Yuki Tsunoda, who moved to Racing Bulls, was logical. His experience with the 2026 car was a major asset. This Zandvoort performance clearly strengthens his case for a long-term F1 future, even though the fight for a Red Bull seat remains intense.

If Lawson can replicate this form, a full-time return alongside Verstappen is not out of the question. For now, he is savouring the moment and proving he belongs at a top team.
