Mark Webber, a nine-time Grand Prix winner, has opened up about his role as a mentor to Oscar Piastri. Speaking on the Straight Talk with Mark Bouris podcast, Webber – who turned 50 on Thursday – reflected on his career and why he feels compelled to pass on his knowledge to the next generation.
Webber insisted that true success is measured not by titles alone, but by longevity at the highest level. "The first two or three years are the hardest. If you can get through that, it speaks volumes about your standards and discipline," he said. This philosophy now underpins his guidance of Piastri, whom he has managed since his junior days and helped propel into Formula 1.
Webber's influence was instrumental in Piastri's dramatic switch from Alpine to McLaren before his F1 debut. He remains a key figure in the Melbourne driver's career, even as he steps back from regular trackside presence in 2026. "It's been enjoyable to help guide him early on. Getting the strategy right is crucial, and he's an immense talent," Webber remarked.
But Webber stressed that his wisdom comes not only from his own achievements, but from observing legends. He cited experiences racing against Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, and Lewis Hamilton, as well as interactions with non-racing athletes like Lance Armstrong and Maria Sharapova. "It's a melting pot of information. I just try to blend the best bits to help Oscar," he explained.
The Webber-Piastri relationship continues to evolve as the young driver matures. With new support from Pedro Matos and Emma Murray, Piastri is expected to grow stronger. Webber believes sharing experience is a duty, and he enjoys the process. "Giving back is part of success," he concluded.
