Verstappen Explains What Caused His Scary Dutch GP Crash

Max Verstappen admitted he was caught out by the conditions

Max Verstappen has revealed what caused his race-ending crash at the Dutch Grand Prix. The four-time world champion's final home race at Zandvoort lasted just a single lap before he dramatically went off in damp conditions.

Verstappen, who started seventh, lost control on the kerb and slammed into the barriers on the outside of the banked final corner. The incident came after a rain shower hit the track prior to the start, making conditions treacherous.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Verstappen admitted to misreading the track. "It was still quite wet in that corner, but as soon as I was going through, I could see a dry line coming. I thought I could accelerate, but suddenly it became a lot more slippery and it caught me out," he explained.

The Dutchman was fortunate not to be collected by oncoming cars as his Red Bull spun back into the path of traffic. "It honestly could have been a lot worse because there were a lot of cars behind me, but luckily that all went well," he added.

The crash capped a difficult weekend for Verstappen, who battled illness throughout. He also had to contend with an incident at the start when he was squeezed onto the grass by Lewis Hamilton and had to fend off stand-in team-mate Liam Lawson.

Verstappen, who has committed his long-term future to Red Bull, acknowledged the team's current struggles. "If you look on average at the whole season, we've been fourth fastest. This weekend really highlighted that. We want to be closer, but we're getting towards the end of the season, and we have to look at next year," he said.

With the title already secured, Verstappen now faces the challenge of maximizing the remaining races while preparing for the future with Red Bull.
