Verstappen: Closer to Retiring Than Changing Teams TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Max Verstappen considered quitting F1

Max Verstappen has admitted he was “closer to retiring” from Formula 1 than switching teams, before committing to a new long-term deal with Red Bull. The Dutchman made the confession during a special press conference ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.

Red Bull announced on Thursday morning that the four-time world champion had extended his contract until the end of the 2030 F1 season, ending speculation linking him with a move to McLaren or Mercedes.

When asked if he ever came close to joining another team, Verstappen replied: “I think I was closer to retiring than changing team! But no, all good.” He was seated alongside team principal Laurent Mekies during the announcement.

Verstappen revealed that the early part of the 2026 season was tough for him. “After the first few races, I said to Laurent, ‘don’t come to me with any kind of questions about the future! Because I didn’t even know if I want to stay’,” he admitted.

Despite the departure of several key personnel, including race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase moving to McLaren in 2028, Verstappen insisted he never wanted to leave. “Of course a few names have left, but at the same time, it’s still my family,” he explained. “I never felt the desire to change just to change.”

His decision to stay was also influenced by talks with F1 and the FIA about future regulations. Verstappen had been a vocal critic of the new engine rules, even threatening to quit. But after discussions about potential improvements and a possible return to V8 engines, he softened his stance.

“I accepted the situation,” he added. “I’m not happy with the new regulations, but the door is open for improvements. I still love racing.” With the new contract, Verstappen is set to remain with Red Bull until at least 2030, putting an end to transfer rumours.
