Collin Veijer left MotorLand Aragon empty-handed but full of confidence. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider spent much of the Moto2 race in the leading group and climbed to third before crashing late on. Despite the disappointment, the Dutchman takes away a positive feeling.
Starting from sixth, Veijer made a strong start, running fifth after lap one and setting the fastest lap. He passed Manuel Gonzalez for fourth, then overtook Daniel Holgado to set his sights on the leaders.
“The start was very good and I could stay with the top five. I had to pass Manuel in the last corner, it was a late move but necessary. Then I had to pass Dani twice because the first time he came back,” Veijer said.
With six laps to go, Veijer had closed to within a second of Alonso Lopez. However, David Alonso came from behind and passed him, and soon after Veijer crashed at Turn 4. “I asked too much of the front tyre. I closed the corner a bit too much and lost grip. A small mistake with big consequences,” he explained.
Despite the DNF, Veijer rated the weekend highly. “We came here for the first time with Moto2 and immediately fought for the podium. The feeling I had before my shoulder injury is back. There are still points to work on, but I feel much better,” he concluded.
