Vasseur: Not the Result We Wanted, But Fresh Softs Give Hope

Zandvoort, Netherlands — As the lights went out in qualifying for the Dutch GP, Ferrari hoped to break into the front rows. Instead, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc had to settle for fifth and sixth, lining up side by side on the third row. A hard pill to swallow, especially after Leclerc came within a few tenths of pole in Sprint Qualifying yesterday.

In today's qualifying, the SF-26 couldn't improve significantly on yesterday's benchmark. The gap to McLaren and Mercedes was noticeable, leaving the Maranello squad with little to complain about. Yet team principal Frederic Vasseur still holds a glimmer of hope: they have a fresh set of soft tyres saved specifically for the race.

Ferrari's Performance Analysis at Zandvoort

Vasseur admitted this is not the result the team expected. “We struggled in all three sessions,” he told Sky Sports. “We have an extra set of new softs for tomorrow, and that's an advantage. But from the Sprint, we saw overtaking here is not easy. So maybe it was better to use it in qualifying.”

That comment reflects Ferrari's strategic dilemma. On one hand, fresh tyres offer flexibility in race strategy, especially if they opt for an early pit stop. However, with Zandvoort's narrow and tricky layout, a better starting position might have been more valuable. Vasseur remains optimistic: “The race is long, and we can play strategically with this extra set.”

With a tight grid ahead, Ferrari must rely on smart strategy and race consistency to climb onto the podium. Meanwhile, fans in the stands hope for spectacular overtakes, though Vasseur reminds that track position often matters more than pure speed here.
