Fred Vasseur has finally addressed the speculation surrounding his future as Ferrari team principal, especially after Christian Horner's name was linked to the hot seat at Maranello. Speaking to the media after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, Vasseur made it clear he is fed up with the repeated questions about his position.
“We are not working in perfect serenity,” Fred Vasseur began when asked about the recent Horner talk. “For me, firstly, but for everybody in the team. For the media, for 50% of the questions [to be] about this, I think it's a bit of a frustrating situation. We are fighting for P2 in the championship, and at the end of the day, we are all speaking a lot about this, and even for the guys in the garage, to discuss about this, it's the best discussion that we can have. But it is what it is; it's not in my hands.”
The Frenchman also took a swipe at Horner, who is currently looking for a job after leaving Red Bull. “Mr Horner is looking for a job - that, everybody knows - everywhere. But what can I do? Just try to do my best to push the team, to raise them to be motivated, focus on what is better today. Each interview, 25 times a day, we are coming back to this.”
Vasseur cryptically added a final remark on the matter, noting, “It is like it is; we still have seven races to go, and I will push until the last corner.” This comment came as he hailed being Ferrari team boss as “the best job in the world”.
Speculation over Vasseur's future has been rife in recent months, as Ferrari's strong early-season form has fallen away. A recent report even claimed that Lewis Hamilton was pushing for personnel changes, though that was rubbished. At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Horner's links to Ferrari dominated headlines. In an interview with The Times, Horner said that working for Ferrari is “the dream”.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, when asked if he still had faith in Vasseur as team boss, simply replied with “yes”. The support from the seven-time world champion is certainly a boost for Vasseur amid the pressure.
Ferrari are still in the fight for second place in the constructors' championship, and with seven races remaining, the team's focus must remain intact. Vasseur himself stressed that he will not be distracted by rumours and will continue to work hard to bring Ferrari back to winning ways.
