A golden opportunity now lies ahead for Kimi Antonelli after securing a crucial third-place podium finish at the dramatic night race of the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix. This important points haul solidifies the young Italian driver's position at the summit of the Formula 1 world championship standings, while his teammate struggled home in ninth place.
With a maximum of six remaining rounds on the 2026 calendar—spanning Texas, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi—a total of 150 points remains up for grabs. The championship advantage held by the rising star of Mercedes has now stretched to a commanding 102 points over his rivals as the season enters its final stretch.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff admitted he never anticipated that their newly introduced car upgrade package would enable his young driver to comfortably outpace the British world champion on track. Speaking after the checkered flag, the Austrian boss acknowledged that the final result far exceeded the team's pre-race expectations.

"Kimi drove really well today. We told him that it was all about scoring solid points. We didn't expect that we could leave Lewis Hamilton behind us. Therefore, this result is better than we thought," Wolff stated, reflecting on a tactically demanding evening under the lights.
Wolff further detailed how on-track battles in the closing stages opened up a window of opportunity for his driver to execute decisive overtaking maneuvers. Tire degradation played a massive role as rivals engaged in fierce wheel-to-wheel combat near the end of the grand prix distance.
"At the end of the Grand Prix, it went well for Kimi that Norris and Hamilton had a bit of a scrap. Then he got past Norris and finally past Hamilton, who was naturally defenseless with his tires," he explained regarding the pivotal moments of the race.
Addressing the team's tire strategy, Wolff highlighted the unpredictable nature of managing the Pirelli compounds throughout the fluctuating stints on the Marina Bay street circuit layout.
"The soft tire lasted surprisingly long at the beginning, while the medium compound didn't look good. After 15 or 20 laps, you weren't sure if it was going to be a one- or two-stop race. It was completely unclear at all," Wolff added.
