Toto Wolff Praises Mercedes Damage Limitation at 2026 Singapore GP

A highly encouraging result was secured by Mercedes at the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix as Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed a crucial podium finish, while George Russell staged a brilliant comeback from the back of the grid.

The Marina Bay street circuit race was anticipated to be a severe test for the Silver Arrows squad. Russell was forced to start from the very back of the formation due to a power unit change penalty, yet the British driver fought relentlessly through the field to salvage a valuable ninth-place finish in a notoriously difficult venue for overtaking.

Meanwhile, his teammate put together a stellar performance from a fourth-place start on the second row. Capitalizing on late-race mistakes from rivals ahead, the young Italian contender capitalized to cross the finish line on the final step of the podium.

Reflecting on the weekend outcome, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed his delight with the execution of the race strategy and the drivers' execution during a challenging event where minimizing points loss was the primary objective.

We knew it would be a difficult race, with our cars starting from fourth and nineteenth positions, in Singapore overtaking is notoriously complicated, and the race was therefore conditioned by strategic choices, Wolff explained during his post-race media debrief.

We asked both drivers to make on-track overtakes to gain positions in the final stages and fortunately they succeeded, the team boss added, praising the efforts of both racers to maximize their respective grid positions.

In addition to the race result, the Singapore weekend provided valuable data regarding the performance differences between the updated W17 package and the previous specification. Wolff noted that while the new configuration requires a more complex setup window, the team has successfully unlocked a better understanding of its underlying potential.
