The 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix qualifying left the Mercedes garage searching for answers as a substantial upgrade package triggered strange handling issues never seen before this season.
Toto Wolff admitted his squad was completely caught off guard by the sudden lack of pace, especially after Andrea Kimi Antonelli had teased immense potential by topping the final practice session.

Instead of locking out the front row, the championship leader had to settle for fourth on the grid, while George Russell endured a disappointing session down in eighth position after struggling heavily with the car's overall balance.

According to Motorsport.com, Wolff pointed out that the W17 was suffering from excessive drag down the straights against Max Verstappen alongside heavy understeer in slow corners. The team is now combing through telemetry data to identify the root cause.
