MotoGP has confirmed that the 2027 Thai Grand Prix at Buriram will remain the season-opening round for a third consecutive year, while also becoming the first race of the championship's new technical era.

The confirmation was announced on 31 July and represents the first officially confirmed element of the 2027 MotoGP calendar. Buriram International Circuit first joined the championship in 2018 and has hosted MotoGP every year since apart from the Covid-affected 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Thailand first became the season opener in 2025 and retained that position in 2026. According to MotoGP, 228,000 spectators attended this year's weekend, which saw Pedro Acosta win the Sprint before Marco Bezzecchi took victory in the Grand Prix.

Carmelo Ezpeleta said keeping Buriram as the opening round reflects the strength of MotoGP's partnership with Thailand and the enthusiasm of its supporters. “Hosting the MotoGP season opener for a third consecutive year is a testament to the outstanding partnership we have built in Thailand and the incredible passion of the fans,” he said.

Ezpeleta also highlighted the strategic importance of the 2027 Thai MotoGP because it will launch the championship's new technical regulations. “The first race under the 2027 regulations will mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our sport, and we're delighted to start that journey in Thailand,” he added.

The confirmation also temporarily eases questions over MotoGP's future in Thailand following reports that the country's government had shown interest in hosting Formula 1. For now, Buriram's position as a major part of the MotoGP calendar remains secure into the start of the 2027 season.

The 2027 Thai MotoGP is the first confirmed element of next year's schedule, with the remainder of the championship calendar still to be announced.
