The Moto2 slots belonging to ELF Marc VDS Racing Team are reportedly set to switch to Tech3 Racing from 2027. This move would see the French squad competing in three classes simultaneously: Moto3, Moto2, and MotoGP. The plan emerged following the passing of Marc VDS owner Marc van der Straten, triggering a restructuring of the team.

According to a report from RaceSport, all members of the Marc VDS Moto2 team have been informed that the team will cease to exist after the 2026 season. However, the two race slots currently occupied by Deniz Oncu and Aron Canet are reportedly being retained and will be taken over by Tech3 Racing. This presents a golden opportunity for Tech3 boss Gunther Steiner, who has been open to returning to the intermediate class since early this season.

Steiner, previously known as a Formula 1 team principal, has long desired Tech3 to compete in all Grand Prix classes. Currently, Tech3 already has a Moto3 team with Valentin Perrone and Rico Salmela, as well as a MotoGP team with Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini in 2026. The absence from Moto2 has been seen as something of an anomaly.

“We are committed to Moto3. I think as one of the teams here, we should also invest in the training ladder. Let’s see what happens with Moto2. I always keep an eye on anything that could be interesting, because it would be nice to have the full ladder. All three classes. It’s actually strange if you are active in Moto3 and MotoGP but not in Moto2,” Steiner told RaceSport.

If this deal materializes, Tech3 would not be a newcomer to Moto2. The French squad competed in the intermediate class from 2010 to 2018 with its own chassis, even securing race wins. After that, they switched to KTM machinery in 2019, aligning with the Austrian manufacturer’s partnership in MotoGP.

The slot transfer would also impact the future of Marc VDS riders. Oncu and Canet would need to find new teams for 2027, while the technical staff working behind the scenes face uncertainty. No official confirmation has come from either Tech3 or Marc VDS, but the news strengthens speculation that Steiner will soon realize his ambition of having a team in all classes.
