The future of David Reynolds within the Supercars championship with Team 18 has come under the spotlight after the veteran driver admitted uncertainty regarding his contract status beyond the 2026 season. The remarks were made directly by the experienced driver to reporters upon his arrival at the iconic Mount Panorama circuit ahead of the race weekend.
Addressing the growing paddock discussions, Team 18 manager Charl Burgess stepped forward to provide a clear and direct clarification. Burgess confirmed that the team had recently held a constructive, closed-door meeting with David Reynolds and his manager, John Ruggiero, to thoroughly discuss their respective positions and future directions within the championship.
During the detailed discussion, the Team 18 management openly expressed a desire to see heightened focus and commitment from the veteran driver. This stems from an overarching quest to secure improved results on the track and maintain high competitive standards throughout the grueling motorsport calendar.

Burgess acknowledged that the realities of the driver market necessitate constant evaluation of available talent. Notably, Team 18 also retains talented prospects within its stable, including Supercheap Auto-backed wildcard Bayley Hall and Porsche Carrera Cup champion Harri Jones, keeping internal options dynamic for the future.
"David knows fully well what’s going on," Burgess stated regarding the transparent internal communication. "We’ve sat and had a very good chat with him and his management before this event. We both understand where we’re both at." Burgess further compared their approach to professional sporting leagues, emphasizing the duty to field the two best possible drivers at any given time.
Throughout the current campaign, David Reynolds has faced tough internal competition, being soundly matched by teammate Anton De Pasquale, who currently sits sixth in the drivers' championship standings. However, Burgess firmly downplayed suggestions that the veteran needs to hastily prove himself over a single weekend.
"We don’t employ a driver – apart from the co-drivers – for one weekend or two weekends," Burgess concluded. "It’s a long season and you want the results to add up in Adelaide. That’s where we’re going for the championship." As the season progresses toward its climax, the ongoing discussions between the team and the veteran driver continue to draw significant attention.
