Speculation surrounding the premier stock car racing championship in the United States has intensified as RFK Racing prepares its strategic lineup for the 2027 season. Amidst complex charter movements across the garage, a major international name from the Australian Touring Car scene has suddenly emerged as a prominent candidate for a highly anticipated seat.
The team's internal restructuring comes as a leased charter is set to shift stables to Legacy Motor Club for Riley Herbst. Despite the changing landscape, RFK remains optimistic about securing a third charter, but is fully prepared to run the third entry as a full-time, non-chartered open car should acquisition efforts fall short ahead of the campaign.
Current projections indicate that the chartered entries will be anchored by Chris Buescher in the #17 machine alongside Ryan Preece in the #60 car. This leaves the #6 entry designated as an open, non-chartered vehicle, instantly sparking intense paddock rumors regarding which specialized driver might be tapped to tackle selected road course events throughout the year.

The whisper network gained serious momentum when 23XI Racing spotter Freddie Kraft dropped a major hint during an episode of his Door Bumper Clear podcast. While withholding the exact name, Kraft explicitly ruled out Shane van Gisbergen while confirming that another prominent Australian Supercars regular has been heavily linked to the vacant #6 seat.
"Interestingly enough, I have been hearing an Australian driver’s name mentioned a heck of a lot around that #6 car for next year," Kraft stated on the podcast. "It’s not SVG. I think he’s from Australia. He runs in Australian Supercars. But I’ve heard that name mentioned a little bit, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out."
According to Speedcafe, rising Supercars star Broc Feeney is the clear front-runner for an opportunity to tackle selected road course races with RFK. Feeney spent valuable time with the organization during a paddock visit to the Sonoma road course earlier this year specifically to evaluate future avenues for 2027 and beyond.
Feeney has previously outlined that his ideal racing program moving forward would feature a balanced mix of NASCAR appearances and international GT outings alongside his full-time commitments in Supercars. However, any interested drivers must exercise patience before finalizing commitments, as the official 2027 NASCAR Cup Series calendar is still pending release, which will officially map out visits to Circuit of the Americas on March 7, Sonoma on July 11, the San Diego street circuit on August 1, and Watkins Glen on September 19.
