Formula 1 racing returned to Sepang with a classic wet-weather drama as a heavy downpour struck right at the race start, immediately throwing pit wall strategies into utter chaos. Amidst the torrential conditions, a sensational drive from Lewis Hamilton successfully brought Ferrari's SF26 back onto the podium following a brilliant and resilient performance.
The tricky track conditions and poor grip of the aging asphalt presented teams with an instant dilemma regarding tyre choices. The grid split down the middle, with the majority opting to start on slick tyres, including both Ferrari and McLaren. However, Oscar Piastri demonstrated brilliant intuition by diving into the pit lane during the formation lap to switch to intermediate tyres, correctly reading the real dangers of the track.
As reported by FormulaPassion, the initial gamble on slick tyres was based on the assumption that Sepang's high ambient temperatures would dry the tarmac rapidly. Radio communications directed toward Lewis Hamilton instructed him simply to survive a single lap, after which the initial gamble was expected to pay off handsomely.

That prediction failed to materialize for two major reasons. First, the old and low-grip asphalt rendered the circuit practically unmanageable on dry rubber, causing drivers on slicks to lose up to 40 seconds on the opening lap alone. Second, the extreme humidity meant that once the surface water was cleared, the track took significantly longer than anticipated to genuinely dry out.
Consequently, while teams like Mercedes and Red Bull made no hesitation in selecting intermediate rubber and pulling away from the pack, others were left scrambling to recover from a costly tactical miscalculation.
