George Russell dominated Formula 1 qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but his post-session joke about teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli's crash stole the spotlight.
Russell secured pole position by a massive 0.837 seconds, while championship leader Antonelli will start a lowly 16th after hitting the inside wall at Turn 1 during Q1. Despite advancing to Q2, damage to his Mercedes prevented him from participating further.
After qualifying, Russell light-heartedly claimed that Antonelli "should be leading a few laps early this time," referencing Antonelli's incredible comeback victory at the Italian Grand Prix, where he charged from 19th on the grid to beat Russell at Monza.
When asked about the main threat to converting his fifth pole of 2026 into a win, Russell named Max Verstappen. "I think Verstappen is going to be a threat. But obviously, you can't discount Kimi. He started 19th in Monza and now he's in 16th, so yeah, he should be leading by a few laps early this time," he said.
Russell admitted he was "shocked" by the dominant margin, the largest in qualifying this season. "I've been feeling in a great spot all weekend. From FP1 I felt confident and hooked up," he explained. "I knew the lap was great, and I had a nice slipstream that gave me an extra tenth and a half to two tenths. It all perfectly came together."
Furthermore, Russell downplayed suggestions of a breakthrough after recent struggles. "I wouldn't necessarily say so. Me and my team have put so much work in to help me get on top of the limitations, and since the summer break it's been great. The performance has been substantially better than the results have shown – it's three front-row starts in the four races since the break," he added.
With this pole, Russell aims for his third win of 2026, while Antonelli must fight from the back to maintain his 81-point championship lead. The race will test both Mercedes drivers' strategy and resilience.
