George Russell has responded to the dominant form of his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli in the 2026 Formula 1 title fight. Antonelli leads the standings by 20 points after securing three consecutive victories, while Russell endured a more difficult Miami weekend, finishing fourth.

Antonelli’s recent performances highlight strong consistency in strategy execution and tyre management, both critical factors in the current ground effect era. Mercedes has also demonstrated improved aerodynamic efficiency, particularly in high-temperature conditions such as Miami, which has supported Antonelli’s front-running pace.

However, Russell emphasised that championship outcomes are not dictated solely by short-term momentum. Drawing on his experience in title campaigns, he pointed out that performance swings are inevitable across a long and varied calendar.

“Clearly, he’s in a really great place right now, and the momentum is with him.”

“But I’ve got enough experience in championships I’ve won to know how momentum swings throughout the year.”

Russell further suggested that early-season results do not fully reflect his potential. Across the opening three races, he believed he had the pace to secure victories, but execution variables such as strategy and race incidents influenced the outcomes, including events in Japan and China.

“I just want to get back on the top step of the podium. The first three races, I had the performance to do that.”

“This weekend, I absolutely did not have the performance. But results could have been very different earlier in the season.”

With the Canadian Grand Prix next on the calendar—a circuit where Russell claimed victory last season—the opportunity to shift momentum remains significant. Montreal’s layout, which rewards braking efficiency and traction, could align more closely with Russell’s driving strengths.

In the broader championship context, the relatively small points gap leaves room for substantial changes. Mercedes’ technical consistency, race execution, and the drivers’ ability to manage pressure will be decisive factors as the 2026 season progresses.
