WorldSBK rider Remy Gardner displayed remarkable grit during the Superbike meeting at the Cremona Circuit. The Australian crashed heavily at Turn 1 during the opening stages of Friday's second free practice session, turning what initially looked like a harmless tumble into a terrifying sequence. The Yamaha R1 machine reared up, flipped multiple times, and was completely destroyed, while Gardner sustained a severe blow to his left hand.

Despite receiving a quick medical green light following a brief check at the circuit's medical center, the 2021 Moto2 World Champion struggled through FP3, Superpole, and Race 1 to finish twelfth. However, persistent pain drove him back to the medical staff for a thorough examination, which revealed a fracture to the fifth metacarpal bone of his left hand. Consequently, the rider was declared unfit for the remainder of the race weekend.

Two weeks after that heavy crash, the penultimate round of the 2026 Superbike World Championship looms at Estoril. Monica Lazzarotti, the chief medical officer, holds the decisive verdict as Gardner must report for a fitness assessment on Thursday ahead of track action. Although his hand is still far from fully healed, the rider remains eager to test his physical limits on the motorcycle.

"The hand is feeling better, so I hope to be back on the grid this weekend," Gardner reflected. "It won't be easy since it's not completely healed yet, but I am confident about riding." Relief arrived at 11:00 when he received formal clearance to participate in FP1, though another mandatory check at the medical center awaited him right after the session.
