Richard Childress Racing (RCR) has finally made a major decision regarding their future in the NASCAR Cup Series. Austin Hill, who previously filled the emergency role following the sudden departure of Kyle Busch, has now been officially appointed as the full-time replacement. This decision ends the speculation that had been hanging since the start of the season, while marking a new chapter for the Welcome, North Carolina-based team.
Hill was first brought in to replace Busch following the tragic incident that befell the legendary driver earlier this year. The team then retired the #8 car that Busch had used, moving Hill into the #33 Chevrolet Camaro starting from the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. That move turned out to be the beginning of a long test that culminated in a full-time contract.
“I'm extremely thankful to Richard and everyone at RCR for believing in me and giving me this opportunity,” Hill said in an official statement. “Every race car driver dreams of competing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, and to have that opportunity with RCR is something I don't take for granted. I've learned so much this year about what it takes to compete at this level.”
Hill's journey with RCR is nothing new. Since 2022, he has been the backbone of the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series (second-tier series) program with the #21 car. During his time in that division, Hill has won 16 races—a record that has made his name increasingly prominent. He will continue to do double duty in the Cup Series and O'Reilly Series this season, but will not return to the feeder series in 2027.
Team owner Richard Childress gave his full endorsement for this promotion. “Austin Hill is a talented race car driver, and his continued growth, work ethic and success across multiple levels of NASCAR competition have positioned him for his next step with RCR,” Childress said. “He's put a tremendous amount of effort into his career, especially this year with everything he's taken on. We're proud to have him continue that growth with RCR in the NASCAR Cup Series.”
This decision provides certainty for RCR amid a challenging season. With Hill having proven his ability to adapt quickly, the team hopes this positive momentum can continue as the NASCAR Cup Series resumes at Daytona on Sunday, August 30 (AEST). All eyes are now on how Hill will seize this golden opportunity to prove he is worthy of filling the position left by one of the biggest names in NASCAR history.
