BIOGRAPHY

Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT (World Rally Team) is the official manufacturing entity of Toyota Motor Corporation competing in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The team's creation was initiated directly by Akio Toyoda in 2015, aimed at restoring the Japanese automotive giant's legacy on the world rally stage following its departure in 1999. Headquartered in Jyväskylä, Finland, the team leveraged local technical expertise by partnering with WRC legend Tommi Mäkinen, who served as the first Team Principal to oversee initial operations and baseline car development.Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT made its top-tier WRC debut in the 2017 season utilizing the Toyota Yaris WRC. Immediate competitiveness was demonstrated through an early victory claimed by Jari-Matti Latvala at Rally Sweden 2017. The squad quickly evolved into one of the most dominant forces in modern rally racing across gravel, snow, and asphalt surfaces. In 2018, the team secured its first Manufacturers' World Championship title of the modern era, validating the mechanical engineering and chassis adaptation of the Yaris WRC platform. The team's dominance deepened under a new leadership structure when Jari-Matti Latvala succeeded Tommi Mäkinen as Team Principal in late 2020. Under Latvala's direction, the team consistently captured consecutive double crowns (Manufacturers' and Drivers' Championships). Drivers such as Ott Tänak (2019), Sébastien Ogier (2020, 2021), and young prodigy Kalle Rovanperä (2022, 2023) earned Drivers' World Championships behind the wheel of the Yaris. Entering the hybrid-based Rally1 technical regulations in 2022, the team introduced the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, maintaining its position at the pinnacle of global competition.Serving as Toyota's motorsport innovation hub, the team focuses not only on competitive results but also on developing future automotive technologies, including testing synthetic fuels and sustainable power solutions. Supported by advanced R&D facilities in Finland and full backing from Gazoo Racing Company in Japan, Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT stands as a benchmark for professionalism, pace, and technical durability in international motorsport.
