Philippe Bianchi has paid an emotional tribute to his late son Jules Bianchi on the 12th anniversary of the Formula 1 accident at Suzuka that ultimately claimed his life. The French racer was involved in a horrifying accident during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix, which was run in treacherous wet conditions due to the approaching Typhoon Phanfone.
The incident unfolded on the 42nd lap of the race when Sauber driver Adrian Sutil spun off and crashed into the barriers at Suzuka's Turn 7. On the following lap under double-waved yellow flags, Jules Bianchi lost control of his Marussia machine and made direct contact with a recovery vehicle deployed to clear Adrian Sutil's car, suffering severe head injuries.
Placed into an induced coma, Jules Bianchi sadly passed away on 17 July 2015 in a hospital in Nice, becoming the first driver to die from a Formula 1 race accident since Ayrton Senna at Imola in 1994. Remembering his son, Philippe shared a touching message on social media alongside an archival photograph from his early racing days, courtesy of Crash.net.

"12 years. I miss you, very sad, but we work for you every day to never forget you. I love you," Philippe wrote. Jules Bianchi made his F1 debut in 2013 and famously scored his and the team's first-ever championship points by finishing ninth at the 2014 Monaco Grand Prix.
In the wake of the tragedy, Formula 1 implemented numerous critical safety enhancements to prevent similar accidents, most notably the introduction of the Virtual Safety Car system. The crash also served as a major catalyst for the eventual development and mandatory integration of the halo cockpit protection device for the 2018 season.
