Ai Ogura will miss this weekend's Aragon Grand Prix. The Trackhouse Aprilia rider suffered a left-hand injury after a crash during training in Japan and requires surgery on Thursday. His absence is a heavy blow to his MotoGP world championship ambitions.
Ogura currently sits third in the standings, 37 points behind leader Jorge Martin of the factory Aprilia team. With only five rounds remaining after Aragon, every point matters. Missing a full round clearly narrows his chances, especially with such tight competition at the top.
Trackhouse confirmed the news in an official statement, revealing a fracture near the left thumb that needs surgery. As a replacement, the team has called up Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori, who will race with number 32 at MotorLand Aragon.
The injury occurred while Ogura was training at a track near Tokyo. He had chosen to stay in Japan to be close to family and friends and to train on production bikes. That decision proved costly. This crash is a second setback after he lost valuable points following a crash at Silverstone last weekend.
Losing Ogura clearly changes team dynamics. Savadori is experienced as a test rider but lacks race rhythm. The burden now falls on his teammate, and the team must work extra hard to keep the bike competitive with a substitute rider.
From a standings perspective, the 37-point gap could now widen. If Martin or other riders behind him perform consistently, Ogura could fall far behind. Though the season is not over, the road to the title is getting steeper. The question is whether Ogura can bounce back and close the gap once he returns.
